[edit] Objective
The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc into the opposing end-zone. The field is rectangular with an endzone at each end. The game is normally played using a 175 g disc.
Ultimate is a mixed sport, women and men play together in teams.
[edit] Gameplay
The players line up at the edge of their respective endzones, and the defensive team throws, or pulls, the disc to the offensive team to begin play. The disc may be moved in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. A player catching the disc must stop after a few steps to run out their momentum. A point is scored when a player catches a pass in the endzone his team is attacking. After a point is scored, the teams exchange ends. Out of bounds, interceptions, blocks, drops and missed throws change possession of the disc. the defense immediately becomes the offense, play does not stop due to a turnover. Ultimate is a non contact sport. A player has ten seconds to make a throw, the marker counts the ten seconds.
[edit] Spirit of the game
“Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.” (official ultimate rules, UPA)
Ultimate is played without referees. Players are responsible for foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
On every tournament a “Spirit of the game” winner is elected by the other teams. Spirit is so highly regarded in ultimate frisbee that the spirit prize is often equal to, if not better than, the prize awarded to the victors.
[edit] Some other disc sports
Disc golf: Disc golf is a sport in which individual players throw a disc into a basket or other target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.
DDC: Double Disc Court is played with two discs, two teams of two players each. Teammates stand in the same court. The goal is to defend a court from an attack by the opponents. Attacks are made in two ways: by throwing a disc in play into the opponents' court in an attempt to have the disc come to rest within that court without ever having touched out-of-bounds, or by causing both discs to be touched by a player or players on the opposing team at the same time.
Guts: Two teams stand in a line parallel to each other. One team throws the disc as hard as possible to the opposing team. If they miss the "scoring area" the receiving team scores a point. If the throw is within the scoring area and the receiving team drops the disc, the throwing team gets a point. The receiving team must catch the disc cleanly, in one hand.
Freestyle: Athletes perform tricks with one or more discs.
