The small group of Ultimate deLuxe left Luxembourg for Brugges on Friday 27; students in the afternoon, workers in the evening. After battling with deviations to recover stray boots and the unique motorway directions around Brussels, most of the team had made it to their various hostel rooms in Brugges by midnight.

[edit]Saturday

A beautiful day in Brugges – warm sun, no wind and perfect Ultimate conditions (apart from the ground which was doing very good impressions of concrete). With our mixed team competing in then open division, and with several late withdrawals from the team (especially of the more experienced players) we were somewhat heisitant about our chances, although this did not diminish our enthusiasm or desire to play!!!

1. Scadour (Rimini, Italy): some familiar faces from Paga; Roberto and his team played and very good, well-spirited match and we thoroughly enjoyed Ultimate de Luxe’s first tournament match on grass! Score = .

N.B.: They announced the following rounrament (Steve has details, of see www.paganello.com/7bynight/index.htm if interested): Pganello 7 by night: 13-15 July, 2007. 32 Co-ed teams playing daily from 18-24hr in Riccione (12 km’s south of Rimini on the Italian Adriatic coast; camping accommodation available).

2. UFO (Holland; semi-finalistes)

3. Slijpschijven (B)??????

4. French Masters Team were definitely fute and made up for in skill, cunning and experience what they lacked in jeuenese (their oldest player was 44 years old); we definitely had the better legs on the day (and not just Laura’s).

The evening entertainment was excellent : sit-down BBQ and « circus » cocktail juggling had the whole crowd laughing. Thierry set another world record for the number of sausages eaten in one sitting, and Fred provided a great example of Belgian hospitality by shouting the first round of Belgian beer. The UDL team then decided to try some of the local brown beverages in a pleasant, smoke-free typical bar, again guided by the experienced palate of Fred.

[edit]Sunday

Another beautiful, warm day. 5. Alpha Strike (B): First game was the early 10hr30 (???) game and….we had our first win against a mixed Dutch team . Fresh legs in the form of Simon and increased communication on and off the field made this one of our better games of the tournament.

6. Gentle 2 (Gent, Belgium): In a strange game with even stranger fouls, but a nonetheless good natured game, UDL placed a very good strong game and picked up it’s second win.

7. Crunchy Nuts (Amsterdam, NL) students showed us great Ultimate techniques on the field and talented nut sucking (actuall M&M’s) after the game, only to be beaten by our own…..Kenn. What a sucker he is!

Laura unfortunately had to leave the field at one stage with breathing problems….promptly to be resolved by a drag on a “cancer stick”.

We eventually decided on a small restaurant off the Markt for our team Sunday night dinner for those who did not have to return directly to Lux. After a fruitless search of Brugess for gauffres a few hardier souls made it to the party in an excellent albeit somewhat brut “Entrepot” night club. A local band well supported by a large brass contingent generated an excellent atmosphere and those whose legs were not exahsuetd after 2 days of brutal Ultimate, danced the night away (or drank the night away if of Trier origin….Jan!). !!!Ey, i´ve done both!!!

[edit]Monday

Another lovely day, but a stronger wind…..early start.

8. Wannabeezzz/Pickup Pick-up team (B): A very courageous pick-up team of mostly young 15/16 year old locals (mostly girls); a strong wind kept the games score low and frustrated the UDL team as much as the opposition. A very good spirited game from the opposition and an interesting discussion after the match as to how Ultimate is developing with young people in the region of Brugges and Gent.

9. Play-off for 34th place against Alpha Strike (B): As in Paga, our last game was a repeat encounter against a team we had previously beaten. The UDL team was clearly feeling the effects of the tournament and the loss of several players and the opposition were there to win. We played and enjoyable last game in the sun, and protected by

Final position: 34 out of 37 teams in open division (3 games won; 6 lost)

Finals: Most of us got to see the semi-finals and finals and thoroughly enjoyed all games. The French women’s team, Yaka played a classy final against Wonderful Copenhagen.

The Italian open team CUS La Fotta showed what short people can do on an Ultimate field with good physical condition, skills and excellent passion and team work. After a tight start to the final (they were down 6-5!), the easily beat the local Belgian Open team (15-6).

The return home: After a chocolate, frites and beignets (& LPG!) search the last group made the journey back to Luxembourg late on Monday evening.

THANKS!!! Thanks to all of those who participated in the games (especially those pick-ups), organised logistics (Kenn), drove the rest of us (Kenn and Ines), the dedicated one-day appearance of coach and mentor, Simon and Gabrijela as our main (only?) supporter!!!

All in all the team had a fantastic experience, learnt a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the on and off field activities. I’m sure everyone that was there would definitely recommend a visit in 2008, especially given the close proximity good level of competition and great location & organisation!!!
